Review – Rook by Sharon Cameron

This is my first review and I am nervous but also excited to share my thoughts and feelings about this book! Thank you for taking the time to read it.

On to the book….

This book had so much promise but it fell short in many ways. The world is hard to imagine – there is barely any world building. I was thrown into this world and was expected to know the rules and background of the world. Don’t get me wrong there was some world building but not enough for just this stand-alone book. The world building was lacking but also the book’s characters! The four main characters are your standard “paper- cutout” characters. The girl who wants freedom but feels traps, the loving older brother, the male best friend who is madly in love with the girl, and the guy everyone hates at first until the girl falls helplessly in love with him. Even when I was reading from each characters point of view I felt that they had the same voice. The story line is predictable and was drawn-out in some places. I could already guess the ending. I had a hard time finishing this book. I skimmed read the last 50 pages because I just didn’t care about the characters at all. This is my opinion and you don’t have to agree with me. I gave this book two stars out of five. I am glad I borrowed the book from my local library and I didn’t buy it.

Overall: Didn’t Enjoy – Not worth the time

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Oh man, it’s such a shame I keep hearing so many negative things about this book. I haven’t read it yet but I’m currently reading Sharon Cameron’s upcoming book The Forgetting and I think it’s amazing. I really want to read Rook next so I can compare my thoughts on her writing… Maybe her writing just improved a lot in between her books!
